The name "Il Castello" was chosen in memory of and in tribute to the Swabian emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen who, around the year 1237, conquered these lands that included in the Vicariate of Valdinievole and Lower Valdarno as part of the ambitious project to reconstruct the Holy Roman Empire. From its interior, a quadrangular tower can be seen, built by Frederick in 1218 to fortify the castle of San Miniato. In addition, to the north, even closer, is the mighty tower placed by his grandfather Frederick I Barbarossa to defend Serravalle's castle.
