Cala Violina: a slice of heaven on the Tuscan coast
The area of the Tuscan Maremma is full of beautiful beaches surrounded by a crystal sea: one of the most famous is definitely Cala Violina. The beach is located north of Castiglione della Pescaia, between Follonica and Punta Ala, and is immersed in the vegetation of the Mediterranean scrub. It is surrounded by the Nature Reserve of Bandite di Scarlino, a 8700 hectares forest full of hiking and mountain biking trails. Clear, fine sand, clear waters and uncontaminated nature make Cala Violina a true little corner of paradise.
Cala Violina: one of the most beautiful beaches in Maremma
The beach is clear and granular and consists of very small quartz grains. The singular name “Violina” derives from the sound that the sand makes when you walk on it, which reminds just that of the violin. Its waters are limpid and the panorama is stunning.
There are no beach properties but in summer, before arriving on the beach, you will find a stand with fresh drinks and sandwiches. Cala Violina is not very big, so in high season it is a little bit crowded. In the pine forest in front of the beach, you will find wooden tables and benches for a snack in the shade of pine trees.
How to get to Cala Violina
Cala Violina can be reached by 2 routes:
One is a wonderful path near the port of Scarlino, in Puntone. A few meters from Il Cantuccio Restaurant there is a bar from which you can enter the thick Mediterranean scrub. The walking distance is about 4 km: the route takes about 1 hour. The trail is a little challenging, but you can also ride it on a bicycle; the scenery with breathtaking views of the sea will pay you back for the hard work.
The other route goes through the dirt road of Val Martina. From Puntone di Scarlino, continue by car for a few km along the Collacchie trunk road to Castiglione della Pescaia, then about 400 m before the Pian d'Alma distributor, turn right onto a dirt road (there is a road sign for Cala Violina); here at the Podere Laschetti there is a large car park. From the parking lot, a 2-km walk path leads to Cala Violina.
Of course, the beach can also be reached by boat.
